Textual 7.2.8 is out, and it’s the first one from us

Three weeks after taking over, here’s the first release with our name on it. Nothing flashy, on purpose: 7.2.8 is a security and bugfix update for Textual 7, the client you already have, and it’s the kind of release we promised you’d keep getting.

The short version of what’s in it:

  • Security. Connections stay encrypted when a server redirects you. Messages and links from other people can no longer trick Textual into sending commands, freezing, crashing, or pretending one channel is another. Your NickServ password stays home when SASL already did the job. Link previews can’t poke around your local network, and Textual asks before opening anything that isn’t a web or IRC link.
  • macOS 27. Channels stay put at the newest message after switching or resizing, and some network errors on newer macOS no longer crash Textual.
  • The little things. A damaged server list or licence file no longer stops Textual from launching, scrolling up no longer snaps you back to the bottom mid-read, scrollback loads in the right order, saved passwords are found again, and the @ in the member list is finally centred. Yes, we noticed too.

Updates now arrive through Sparkle 2.10, and the About window and Help menu point at textualapp.com and GitHub, where this release, like everything else, is open source.

Grab it via Check for Updates in Textual, or download it directly. The full release notes are in the docs, as always.

Textual 7 keeps getting security fixes until Textual 8 ships, and for a good while after. More on 8 soon. For now: update, carry on, say hi in #textual.
