Downloads, updates, and compatibility

Textual 7 is the version currently distributed under Blendbyte's maintainership, while work on Textual 8 is planned. We will announce its release details separately; an old roadmap or beta link is not a promise about Textual 8.

The current release

The current release is Textual 7.2.7, which requires macOS 12 Monterey or later. Use the main download for the current version, and consult the Textual 7 release notes when checking what changed.

To check for updates from the standalone app, use Textual → Check for updates…. Keep a backup of your preferences before a major update or a change of distribution.

Older versions of macOS

The historical download table lists 7.2.6 for macOS 11 Big Sur and later, several 7.1 releases for OS X 10.9.5 and later, and older Textual 5 and 6 releases for OS X 10.8.3 and later. These are historical compatibility statements, not a current security-support guarantee.

The legacy download table preserves the individual version links and requirements. Older releases may lack fixes present in newer versions, so use the current release where your Mac supports it.

Existing Mac App Store copies

Textual stopped being sold in the Mac App Store in May 2024. Existing owners can check their account's Purchases section while downloads remain available, but continued App Store access is not guaranteed. Keep a backup of your installed Mac App Store copy with its receipt and back up your preferences separately. Read licences and the App Store transition before switching distributions; migration to standalone remains under consideration.

Beta releases

A beta is a test build and may behave differently from the stable release. Keep a separate backup and installation when testing one, especially if a return to an earlier version might be necessary.

The original beta guide records the former download and notification workflow. The presence of that archived link does not mean there is an active Textual 8 beta; current announcements will appear in News.
