Fixing record overflow (-9847) errors

Historical reference: connecting securely to a port without TLS.

A reference from an earlier chapter

This material preserves the original Textual documentation and may describe older versions, former services, or superseded policies. It is not a statement of current availability or new Blendbyte commitments.

For current guidance: Troubleshooting a connection.

Current guidance: Use the port and TLS settings published by your network. Only turn off Connect Securely when the network does not offer TLS, and never send passwords over an unencrypted connection. See connection troubleshooting.

This error is typically caused by an attempt to connect securely to somewhere that does not support SSL/TLS.

This guide will instruct you how to fix this error.

Steps

  1. Select the connection which is producing this error.

  2. Open Server Properties using the keyboard combination Command U

  3. In the window that appears, look at the value of the field labeled Port

The standard port to connect securely to is 6697. If that is not the value of this field, then set it to so and reconnect. If that change does not fix this error, then the network most likely does not support SSL/TLS.

Check the website of the network to find out if they list a specific port for connecting securely. If you are unable to locate this information, then continue to step four.

  1. Open Server Properties if you closed it

  2. Change the value of the field labeled Port to 6667

  3. Uncheck the preference labeled Connect Securely

  4. Save and reconnect
