A reference from an earlier chapter

This material preserves the original Textual documentation and may describe older versions, former services, or superseded policies. It is not a statement of current availability or new Blendbyte commitments.

These answers are retained for historical reference. In particular, do not disable certificate validation to solve a connection problem, and do not rely on old purchase or promo-code instructions. See the current guides linked above.

Why is Textual leaving the Mac App Store?

The reason the App Store is no longer used comes down to one simple truth. It was a headache to use. Textual is a feature rich app. Updates for it are small and infrequent. When updates are made, it is much easier to publish them on codeux.com and be done with it.

Can I move from the Mac App Store version to the standalone version?

Migration to standalone remains under consideration and is not currently available through Blendbyte's licensing service. See current licensing guidance for the status and how to preserve your installed copy. The original conversion guide is retained for historical reference.

What's the difference between the Mac App Store version and the standalone version?

Very few differences exist between Mac App Store version and the standalone version.

The current differences are:

  • Codeux Software receives a larger percentage of your payment when you purchase the standalone version.

  • The Mac App Store version of Textual can synchronize your setup across multiple Macs using iCloud.

  • The standalone version of Textual receives faster updates.

  • The standalone version of Textual receives beta updates.
